abstracts - in the study

“In The Study” is the first purely abstract series of paintings I’ve created. It is also the first studio series I completed in over a decade. After years of playing with paint in the landscape I decided to play with color in the studio. I did not set out with specific inspiration, but we have a spare bedroom in our home that is my office. We’ve been thinking about remodeling it into a dark and moody study. Imagine leather chairs and dark walnut bookcases. A place to sip some cognac and ponder the vastness of the universe while chewing on an unlit pipe (I’m not actually smoking in my home, that would be crazy). I was recently married, and became a homeowner for the first time so perhaps a nesting instinct has kicked in. But for the first time the interior of our home felt like a subject I wanted to explore. These paintings are my color boards for an imagined room we have yet to create, but also perhaps a window into a life I can now imagine that felt unlikely not so long ago. The idea of creating a study is a bit fatuous, and so are these paintings. Fatuous color. But it brings me joy so I painted them.
